Space City Home Network Upgrades Audio Capabilities With Solid State



Space City Home Network (SCHN), a regional sports network based in Houston, Texas, has recently upgraded its audio control room with the installation of a Solid State Logic (SSL) System T S300-32 audio console. This move is part of SCHN's ongoing efforts to enhance its broadcast capabilities and integrate advanced audio technologies into its operations. The new console replaces the previous SSL C10, which had been in service since 2011 and was sourced from NBC News in Los Angeles when the facility was under different ownership. The decision to upgrade was driven by the need for more advanced features and better integration with modern broadcast infrastructures. Chief Broadcast Engineer Chris Frazier expressed confidence in SSL's products, stating that the System T was a natural progression from the C10, highlighting the reliability and quality of SSL's equipment. 




The SSL System T S300-32 console is a state-of-the-art digital audio mixing platform designed for high-performance broadcast environments. It features a 32-fader control surface and is powered by the TE2 Tempest Engine, which supports up to 1024 input/output paths. This extensive I/O capacity is crucial for live sports broadcasting, where multiple audio sources need to be managed simultaneously. The console's integration with Dante-enabled devices allows for seamless audio routing and management across the network. At SCHN, the System T is connected to various SSL Net I/O interfaces, including the D64 AES to Dante converters, A32 SuperAnalogue line-level I/O interfaces, and the SB i16 SuperAnalogue mic/line to Dante stage box. This setup ensures high-quality audio signal transmission and flexibility in handling diverse audio inputs from different sources. 

One of the key advantages of the SSL System T S300-32 is its native Dante integration, which plays a pivotal role in SCHN's networked production environment. Dante is an audio-over-IP protocol that facilitates the transmission of high-quality audio signals over standard Ethernet networks. By adopting Dante, SCHN has been able to extend its audio network across its production facility and connect with remote venues via dark fiber. This infrastructure enables the production team to manage audio feeds from local sports venues and remote locations efficiently. The ability to route audio signals directly from the console using Dante's routing control system simplifies the workflow and reduces the need for complex cabling and hardware. According to Frazier, System T's inbuilt Dante routing control determines 90% of their audio routes, underscoring its central role in their operations.

The installation of the SSL System T S300-32 was carried out by Advanced Systems Group LLC (ASG), a systems integration firm with extensive experience in broadcast technology. ASG had previously worked with SCHN's former owner on similar projects, providing asset management, archive, and broadcast equipment solutions. The decommissioning of the old C10 console and the commissioning of the new System T were meticulously planned during a four-day break from live productions to minimize disruption. The transition was completed swiftly, with the new system being fully operational within a week. Frazier commended the support provided by SSL and ASG, noting that the project was a resounding success due to the collaborative efforts and expertise of all parties involved. 

With the new SSL System T S300-32 console in place, SCHN has been able to expand its production capabilities. The network's production facility is now connected to local sports venues via dark fiber, allowing for direct video and audio feeds from the venues to the control room. This setup enables the production team to manage and broadcast games from remote locations, such as road games for the Houston Astros and Houston Rockets, from their central facility. Additionally, the upgraded system has facilitated the extension of their Dante network to support pre- and post-game shows, enhancing the overall production quality and efficiency. The integration of the SSL System T has thus played a crucial role in SCHN's efforts to modernize its broadcast infrastructure and meet the demands of contemporary sports broadcasting. 

The upgrade to the SSL System T S300-32 console reflects SCHN's commitment to delivering high-quality sports broadcasting to its audience across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico. By investing in advanced audio technology and infrastructure, SCHN aims to enhance the viewing experience for its viewers and maintain its competitive edge in the regional sports broadcasting industry. The seamless integration of the new console into their existing network demonstrates the effectiveness of strategic planning and collaboration in achieving technological advancements.
