Artificial Intelligence

Image
In the realm of social science research,   Artificial Intelligence (AI)   has emerged as a game-changer, revolutionizing the way researchers collect, analyze, and interpret data. This transformative technology is not only accelerating the pace of discovery but also expanding the horizons of what is possible in understanding human behavior, society, and culture. AI's ability to process vast amounts of data with speed and precision is perhaps its most prominent feature. In the context of social science research, this capability has paved the way for novel research methodologies. Traditional surveys and interviews, while valuable, often suffer from limitations such as sample bias and subjective responses. AI-driven data analysis can harness the power of big data, tapping into a wide range of sources, including social media, online forums, and even sensor data, to gain insights into human behavior on an unprecedented scale. One of the critical areas where AI is making a sig...

They are also dominant forces in modern society and international economic development. Strengthening these areas can foster open, transparent, and meritocratic systems of governance throughout the world. The Department of State executes public diplomacy programs that promote the value of science to the general public. It also implements capacity-building programs in emerging markets that train young men and women to become science and technology entrepreneurs, strengthening innovation ecosystems globally. Modern physics

Image
Modern physics is a branch of science that deals with the post-Newtonian concepts of physics, incorporating elements of quantum mechanics and relativity. Unlike classical physics, which describes macroscopic phenomena at everyday speeds, modern physics explains the behavior of matter and energy under extreme conditions, such as at the atomic and subatomic levels, or at speeds approaching that of light. Quantum mechanics, a cornerstone of modern physics, reveals the discrete nature of energy and the probabilistic nature of particle properties, fundamentally altering our understanding of matter's structure and interactions. Relativity, introduced by Albert Einstein, revolutionizes the concept of space and time, showing that they are interwoven into a four-dimensional continuum known as spacetime. The theory of general relativity describes gravity not as a force, but as the curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. Together, these theories have led to groundbreaking technologi...

the scientific method is to go and look, and then look again. The most elaborate experiments and abstruse equations are designed to answer the simple question, “What are the facts?” Today this question seems so natural and obviously sensible that it is hard to understand how for centuries men could repeat Pliny’s statement, that the blood of a goat would shatter a diamond, when a simple test would have disproved it.                Yet science does remain simply a form of organized intelligence; to become oriented to it, we again do well to begin with the obvious. Although men talk as if the object of intelligence were the discovery and contemplation of eternal truths, actually they employ it chiefly to handle the new situations that are always arising even in a routine life. In daily experience they are continually experimenting, reconstructing, adjusting themselves to a continually changing environment; otherwise there could be no consciousness, ...

The natural sciences

Image
To risk sounding like a smart aleck seven-year-old, technically speaking you can only prove things mathematically. If you need to know that one plus one equals two, don’t go into a chemistry lab. The natural sciences deal with objects and forces that can be observed and measured. Scientists weigh the data from their experiments and try to come up with a way of understanding the material world that makes sense of them. For example, if I travel around my local area and see nothing but brown cows, then I could try out the statement that “all cows are brown”. I couldn’t prove that all cows are brown. I could never rule out the existence of a different-coloured cow somewhere in the world. Scientific knowledge is always  provisional.                         The success of science lies in the fact that, if you keep doing experiments, you usually get nearer to the truth. So after years of travelling and corresponding with far...

The National Institute

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has joined other federal agencies in celebrating the Year of Open Science in 2023 as we mark the ten-year anniversary of a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy memo requiring increased access to results of federally funded research. "Open Science" is the principle and practice of making research products as widely available as possible, fostering collaborations and improving equity while protecting security and privacy. During the past 10 years, NIST has developed portals through which the public can access our research data as well as open-source research code. These research products are provided with digital object identifiers (DOIs)  and sample  citations to make them readily discoverable and citable. NIST’s peer-reviewed publications are available through PubMed Central, and NIST Technical Series publications are available through the Government Publishing Office. NIST provid...

physical sciences

physical sciences In the physical sciences, and particularly fundamental research, describing the technical benefits of your study is a challenge in and of itself. Therefore, it’s common to forget to include a rigorous statement about your study limitations. Being transparent about one’s study design limitations is an important and expected part of any new research. In the physical sciences especially, the precise determination of a study’s  limitations  may be considered to be one of the strongest indicators of the author’s experience, as well as control over experimental constraints. Iterate Your Study’s Focus The key to aligning your description of study limitations with the reader’s expectations is to iterate the focus of your study’s aim. First, cite well-referenced principles and studies so that your reader can orient themselves before judging the rationale of your stated objectives and limitations that follow in-kind. Then, explicitly state the scope of your results to ...

nature of social science

Grossmann and colleagues note that large language models trained on vast amounts of text data are increasingly capable of simulating human-like responses and behaviors. This offers novel opportunities for testing theories and hypotheses about human behavior at great scale and speed. Traditionally, social sciences rely on a range of methods, including questionnaires, behavioral tests,  observational studies , and experiments. A  common goal  in social science research is to obtain a generalized representation of characteristics of individuals, groups, cultures, and their dynamics. With the advent of advanced AI systems, the landscape of data collection in social sciences may shift. "AI models can represent a vast array of human experiences and perspectives, possibly giving them a higher degree of freedom to generate diverse responses than conventional human participant methods, which can help to reduce generalizability concerns in research," said Grossmann. 2nd Edit...

social environment

Image
Social Science  is the study of the activities of the physical and social environment. Basically, it is the study of human relations or the scientific study of human society. It deals with the humans-their relationships, behaviour, development and resources they use and many kinds of organizations they need to carry in their daily life like the workplace, school, family, government, etc. It is important because its study helps us to gain knowledge of the society we live in. Generally,  Social Science  focus on the relationships among individuals in society.  It  is the mixture of many subjects like History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Social Psychology and many more. The main  definition of social science  is – “The  social sciences subjects  are those subjects which describe and examine the humans”. Social science is the society related study — the primary reason for Social studies to help students to develop th...

students

Social science  is often considered a difficult subject to score marks. While some students find it boring, many dread the subject due to the vast syllabus.  But it is important to understand that social science is important. Also, it can be interesting, if students understand the subject and relate it to real life.  Here are five useful tips to make learning social science interesting.                                            Social science provides students with knowledge about their country and the world too.  It has four sub-subjects: geography, history, civics, and economics. While geography teaches about landscapes, places, mineral wealth, climatic conditions, etc., history is about various civilizations, kings, kingdoms, wars, freedom struggles, etc.  Civics deals with functions of the government, the Indian Constitution, and rights/duties, whil...

Computers

Image
Computational social science uses a computational approach to understand the concepts of the social sciences and then formulate some new concepts out of them. Computers are used to analyze, model, and simulate social phenomena. In simpler words, it would mean that you are using digital data to understand human behavior. or that reason alone, social media platforms like Facebook (and all the other allied services, including Instagram) invite PhD applications from all around the globe for the Meta PhD Fellowship. This program allows the relevant personnel of the social media platform to collaborate with these doctoral students. Both groups engage in innovative and relevant research jointly in areas related to social behavior and computer science. Some of these areas include how to engage users in a more positive way, how to remove the irritating features that could increase the bounce rate, or how to characterize troublesome behavior online and reduce or eliminate it completely. Th...
